Glutathione and its role in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
By Jameson Simpson Glutathione is often found to be low in patients who have chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia. It is one of the most important intracellular reductants and can be depleted by many environmental causes. Pollution, heavy metal toxicity (from mercury fillings or otherwise), tobacco or other toxins can deplete your body of glutathione and put your body at risk to free radicals and chemicals in the environment. The glutathione molecule is too big to be absorbed in the stomach or intestinal lining. The best way that we have to increase its levels in the body is to supplement its precursors or inject it intravenously. It its not easy to find a local doctor that gives intravenous glutathioneso it is often easier to take supplements like NAC or whey protein. NAC is a safe form of cystine that is then turned into glutathione in the body. Its is superior to whey protein for increasing glutathione levels because whey protein increases the levels of cystine alone. This might lead to more free radicals because cystine competes with glutamate for absorption. High levels of glutamate can cause levels of free radicals to increase. I.v. pushes are another safe and effective way to supplement glutathione. The drawback to these is that it is very expensive and often hard to find a doctor that will give this to you. They are probably the quickest way to increase glutathione levels in the body and if you have a severe depletion, this would be the recommended route to take.
